[ARCHIVED] Holiday Recycling Guide - Make Your Holidays Greener!

As the holidays approach, we want to ensure that you are well-prepared to make a positive impact on our environment while celebrating. Our Holiday Recycling Guide is here to help you sort through what's recyclable and what should be handled with care.

Recycling Holiday Lights:

We are excited to announce our partnership with Elgin Recycling for the 13th Annual Holiday Lights Recycling Program. You can drop off old holiday lights at any time in the labeled receptacles in front of the Police Department or the Itasca Public Works (411 N. Prospect Avenue).

Accepted lights for this program include Mini lights (or Italian lights), C7 lights, C9 lights, rope lights, LED lights, extension cords, and more. Please DO NOT include lawn ornaments or other holiday decorations.

Christmas Tree Disposal:

Republic Services offers a pickup service during the first two weeks of January on your regular garbage day (please note, this is for real trees only). Ensure that trees are free of ornaments, garlands, lights, and tinsel before placing it in the parkway next to your garbage, with the trunk facing the street. Wreaths, garlands, and natural décor won't be collected.

Items That Can't Be Recycled:

  1. Bubble wrap (consider reusing)
  2. Foam peanuts (some UPS stores will accept and reuse)
  3. Ribbon and bows (consider reusing)
  4. Anything on the tree
  5. Sticky gift labels
  6. Gift bags if coated, laminated, dyed
  7. Metallic wrapping paper (consider reusing)
  8. Soiled disposable tableware
