Construction Update – Bloomingdale Road - Week of April 25

We are pleased to report that IDOT has awarded a contract to R.W. Dunteman to perform the reconstruction and resurfacing of Bloomingdale Road from Irving Park Road to IL-53 (Rohlwing Road). The project will consist of reconstruction and resurfacing of Bloomingdale consisting of pavement widening, installation of curb and gutter, storm sewer improvements, culvert improvements and stamped asphalt cross walks.  A portion of Bloomingdale Road, near the bridge over I-290, is maintained by Addison Township and will remain a rural cross section with roadside ditches.

APPROXIMATE DATES OF CONSTRUCTION

START DATE: APRIL 25, 2022

END DATE: NOVEMBER 30, 2022

Bloomingdale Limits

The existing pavement of Bloomingdale Road is in poor condition and needs to be reconstructed. The addition of curb and gutter will improve the stormwater drainage and extend the life of the road along the Bloomingdale Road corridor.  The new design will increase the safety of  both vehicular and pedestrian traffic by the widening of pavement and providing more visible cross walks and signage.

The reconstruction of Bloomingdale Road will have a significant impact on travel in the area. Due to the reconstruction, Bloomingdale Road will require a detour route and will only have one-way traffic during the duration of the project.  One-Way traffic in the west bound direction will be maintained from Irving Park Road to IL-53. There will be no eastbound traffic on Bloomingdale Road. North and south cross street access and driveways along Bloomingdale Road will be maintained during construction with temporary aggregate. Residents in the area that want to travel eastbound will need to follow the detour route west to IL-53 to Irving Park Road or utilize local roads to maneuver around the construction area.

Bloomingdale Detour Route

What to Expect:

  • Utility work (ComEd, MCI, etc.) along the Bloomingdale Road corridor has been taking place over the past month or two in preparation of the reconstruction project.  This work will continue.
  • Heavy Construction Equipment, material deliveries, material storage in parkways and construction noise will be present from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on a daily basis.
  • Use CAUTION in around the construction site.
  • Starting April 25, 2022, the contractor will begin staging the detour route. Only ONE-WAY traffic in the westbound direction will be allowed.
  • Pre-Stage Construction
    1. One-way westbound traffic only will be along the north side of the existing roadway.
    2. Temporary pavement will be constructed along the south edge of the existing roadway to provide the required width for one-way traffic during the reconstruction process.
    3. Utility and drainage improvements will be installed at various locations.
  • Stage 1 - Construction
    1. One-way westbound traffic will shift to the south side of the roadway to allow reconstruction of the north half of the roadway to commence.
    2. Utility and drainage improvements will be installed along the north side of Bloomingdale Road.
    3. Existing pavement of the north half of the roadway will be removed.
    4. New curb & gutter and roadway pavement will be constructed along the north half of the roadway.
    5. Driveway aprons along the north side of the road will be removed and reconstructed.
    6. Grading of the north parkway between from the right-of-way to the new curb will be completed.

    4. New curb & gutter and roadway pavement will be constructed along the south side of the roadway.
    5. Driveway aprons along the south side of the road will be removed and reconstructed.
    6. Grading of the south parkway between from the right-of-way to the new curb will be completed.
  • Stage 3 - Construction
    1. One-way traffic detour will be removed.
    2. Grinding of the resurfacing portion of the roadway will be done under on-way flagging operations which will allow for two-way traffic.
    3. Final surface course will be place over the entire roadway.
    4. Final landscaping and restoration (seed and blanket) will be performed in the parkways.

Properties along Bloomingdale Road will have their driveway apron removed and replaced as part of the construction.  If your driveway is affected, there will be a time during construction when you may not have access to your driveway during working hours when construction activity occurs.  However, in no case should your driveway be out of service overnight, except for when any new concrete driveway and/or curb is poured to allow proper time for the concrete to cure which may be for a period of three (3) to five (5) days.   During this time, you will need to park any cars you may want to use along the neighboring streets.  The contractor has been instructed to ensure that residents to be impacted by construction are notified in advance when they will not have access to their driveways.

We ask for your full understanding and cooperation during construction and look forward to an improved Bloomingdale Road completion of these improvements.
