To begin, an Auger Pit will be excavated on Walnut Street, near Line Street and a Receiving Pit will be excavated on N. Walnut Street between the METRA Railroad and Orchard Street. Beginning Tuesday, April 19th the Receiving Pit excavation process will begin; and beginning Thursday, April 21st the excavation process for the Auger Pit will begin. After the access pits (Receiving Pit and Auger Pit) are installed, a steel casing pipe will be tunneled under Irving Park Road, Springbrook Creek and the METRA tracks between both access pits. Following, the 12-inch diameter water main will be installed in the steel casing pipe and connected to the existing water main system after testing and chlorination. Additionally, an open cut storm sewer and watermain installation will take place on Walnut Street from Orchard Street to the METRA tracks, with a tunneled steel casing portion of storm sewer along the north side of the Metra tracks.
SOUTHBOUND WALNUT STREET CLOSED
FROM ORCHARD STREET TO IRVING PARK ROAD
BEGINS TUESDAY, APRIL 19TH
The tunneling operations on Walnut Street consisting of installation of water main, storm sewer and restoration of the Roadway (which is estimated to last 8 weeks), will begin on Monday, April 18th and will require the closure of southbound traffic on Walnut Street from Orchard Street to Irving Park Road beginning Tuesday, April 19th. During this stage of construction, Walnut Street (between Irving Park Road and Line Street); Line Street; and southbound Walnut Street from Orchard Street to Irving Park Road will be closed. The Village has worked closely with the contractor to reduce the impact to the downtown area and maintain one-way northbound traffic on Walnut Street from Irving Park Road and one-way westbound traffic on Orchard Street from Walnut Street.
Temporary northbound Walnut Street closures between Irving Park Road and Orchard Street may still be necessary but will be significantly reduced in duration. Additional signs have been posted to notify travelers that the Downtown Businesses are open during construction.
To maintain northbound Walnut Street traffic from Irving Park Road, a portion of the of the train station garden will be utilized for staging and construction operations. Additionally, the south parking area along Orchard Street and the eastbound traffic lane of Orchard Street will also be needed for construction operations. A map of the construction staging, closures, traffic flow patterns and detour route has been included for your convince and can also be found at http://www.itasca.com/2074/Roadway-and-Infrastructure-Project.
As work proceeds, there will also be short-term lane closures on Northbound Walnut Street between the METRA Railroad tracks and Orchard Street to accommodate the installation of the water main, storm sewer and restoration of pavement and cross walks.
We will send or deliver future notices of construction updates and closures, as the project progresses. You can additionally check the Village website at www.itasca.com for additional information.
We understand that the construction will impose inconvenience to our downtown businesses and residents alike, and we are committed to working with you during this stage of construction to minimize the disruption. We ask for your full understanding and cooperation during construction, and look forward to an improved stormwater system, water distribution system, and roadway network upon the completion of these improvements.
