[ARCHIVED] Pumpkin Smash Event - Saturday, November 4

The fun-filled event will be held at the Itasca Public Works complex located at 411 N. Prospect Ave., from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

What is the Pumpkin Smash?

The Pumpkin Smash is not your average post-Halloween gathering; it’s a community-driven initiative with a mission. Our goal is to responsibly return nutrients to the earth by diverting pumpkins from landfills. Instead of tossing away those jack-o'-lanterns, we provide a convenient drop-off location for residents to compost them. This eco-friendly spectacle unfolds each year on the Saturday following Halloween, bringing together the community for a day of eco-conscious fun.

Why Keep Pumpkins Out of the Landfill?

  • Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Landfills can be notorious greenhouse gas factories, with methane being a significant culprit. By composting pumpkins, we’re taking a stand against these harmful emissions and contributing to a healthier, cleaner environment.
  • Creating Nutrient-Dense Soil: The magic of composting turns pumpkins into a valuable soil amendment, rich in nutrients. Our nutrient-dense compost will work wonders for local gardens and green spaces, ensuring a bountiful and thriving landscape.
  • Preserving Resources: Pumpkins are a treasure trove of water, comprising approximately 90% of their weight. Rather than wasting this valuable resource in landfills, composting allows us to return it to the earth, nurturing the soil for future growth and prosperity.

To participate in this program, please clean your pumpkins and remove any candles, yarn, stickers, or other decorations before dropping them off.
