Letter From Mayor Jeff Pruyn Concerning Starbucks Closure

I want to update you on the status of Starbucks in Itasca. The store was run by Starbucks corporate who leases the location. We are very disappointed that Starbucks made the decision to abandon downtown Itasca

It is important to point out that, over the last year, Starbucks corporate representatives failed to respond to multiple requests from the Village for information. Only after a local Starbucks employee began providing notice to residents of the impending move date did Starbucks corporation finally notify the owner of the property that it was closing.

Since we found out about Starbucks leaving, our number one priority has been to help find a suitable replacement for our residents. Suffice it to say, working with Starbucks corporate has been difficult, and they have stated they will not fully vacate the property until November, meaning that even if a suitable tenant was found, the property will still be vacant for several months.

Like the rest of the country, the Village is feeling the effects of COVID-19, but it hasn’t stopped our search. The owner of the property is working closely with the Village and is excited about potential opportunities. While I understand many are disappointed in Starbucks decision, I am confident it will only be a matter of time before a similar business is up and thriving.

I want to make one thing perfectly clear, the Village Board, staff, and I remain 100% committed to making this location thrive for years to come.

Thank you.

Mayor Jeff Pruyn
