Weekly Construction Updates

The new flyover ramp bridge connecting eastbound I-290 to eastbound IL Rt. 390 is now open to traffic, creating a new free-flow movement within the I-290 Interchange. It is expected that the new free-flow ramp will eliminate bottlenecks and significantly reduce travel delays on IL Rt. 390 and through the interchange with the elimination of the last remaining traffic signal at the interchange controlling traffic flow between eastbound I-290 and eastbound IL Rt. 390.

Please use caution while driving in construction zones. On IL Rt. 390 a 45 mph work zone speed limit is in effect throughout the construction season. Work zone speed limits are in place on other roads in the project area as well, including a 55 mph work zone speed limit on I-290. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise drivers of a $10,000 fine and a 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker.

Please be advised, the newly constructed ramp from eastbound I-290 to eastbound Illinois Route 390 is scheduled to open in a one lane configuration at 1 a.m. on Tuesday, November 29. May 14

Construction of new sound walls along I-290 is starting. Notifications to impacted residents will be provided next week with staff walking door to door to deliver flyers.

In the Hamilton Lakes area, grinding of Pierce Road and Windsor Drive has begun and will be complete by the end of this week. Next week repair of the roadway base will occur on these streets. Also next week, spot curb repair and replacement on Park Boulevard will continue.

May 8

All traffic exiting from eastbound I-290 will move onto 1 ramp. Work is scheduled to begin after 10 p.m. on May 8, reducing the number of lanes on a section of westbound IL Route 390 (Thorndale Avenue). All traffic exiting to IL Route 390 from eastbound I-290 will be moved onto 1 ramp to continue construction of the new flyover ramp that will connect westbound I-290 to IL Route 390.

On IL Route 390, westbound traffic will be reduced to 2 lanes near the exit to eastbound I-290. The outside westbound lane will serve as an exit only lane to I-290. The IL Route 390 lane reduction will be in place for about 2 months.

In addition, a portion of the ramp carrying traffic from eastbound I-290 to IL Route 390 is scheduled to close later this week for construction. The existing eastbound I-290 to eastbound IL Route 390 ramp will be widened and all vehicles exiting eastbound I-290 onto IL Route 390 will continue to the same traffic signal with westbound traffic directed to turn right and eastbound traffic directed to turn left. Up to 10,500 vehicles a day use the segment of the ramp serving only westbound IL Route 390 . Up to 18,000 vehicles a day use the combined ramp.

The lane reduction on IL Route 390 and the ramp closure are needed to provide a work zone for construction of the new interchange connecting IL Route 390 and I-290. This year, 8 piers will be built for the flyover ramp as part of the I-290 Interchange Project. Beam placement for the flyover ramp is expected to begin later this year and be complete in spring 2015. Work will also begin on the new ramp connecting westbound I-290 to eastbound IL Route 390, but that work will have no immediate impact on traffic.
The I-290 Interchange is being reconstructed to provide direct access to and from IL Route 390 in all directions.

The Illinois Tollway will start work this week to being building the IL Route 390 mainline. Weather permitting, work is scheduled to shift traffic on the Elgin O’Hare Expressway between Meacham Road/Medinah Road and Rohlwing Road to create a work zone for roadway reconstruction. Overnight lane closures will be necessary to complete pavement striping and to shift traffic. Lane reductions will be removed by 5 a.m. daily in advance of the morning rush hour.

When completed, eastbound and westbound traffic will then be shifted to the right and work will begin to rebuild the inside shoulders and lanes. Traffic is expected to remain in this configuration until late summer.

Once the traffic shift is on place, a 45 mph speed limit will be in effect 24/7 in the Elgin O’Hare construction zone, whether or not workers are present.

In the Hamilton Lakes area, resurfacing of Village streets is underway. Construction signage will be installed later this week for road work on Park Boulevard. Next week, the contractor will begin spot curb repair and replacement and curb drain structure repair on Park Boulevard. This process will take about 2 weeks, and then grinding of the asphalt will occur in mid-May. Spot curb repair and replacement and curb drain structure repair will also continue next week on Windsor Drive and Pierce Road.
